Decision on Holding Iran Int’l Quran Contest Online Not Made Yet
Abbas Salimi, head of the contest’s information dissemination committee, said a decision has not been made about the issue yet.
In June, Mehdi Qarasheikhlu, head of the Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Organization’s Quranic Affairs Center, said the competition may be cancelled.
He noted that the event had been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
It is possible that this year’s competition will be cancelled altogether, he said.
The 37th International Quran Competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran had been scheduled to be held on April 10-14 but was delayed given the concerns about spread of COVID-19.
Iran’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization annually organizes the international Quranic event with the participation of Quran activists from various countries.
Quran reciters and memorizers from over 80 countries took part in the 36th edition, held in Tehran in April 2019.
The coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China, has infected over 27.8 million people around the world and killed more than 900,000.
The outbreak has had a major impact on global sporting, cultural, religious and political events, with a host of events canceled or postponed.
