Muslim cleric Qaradawi Dies at 96

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egyptian Muslim cleric Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi passed away on Monday.

 

This was announced in a post in his official Twitter account.

Based in Qatar, he was the former chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. He was also known as the spiritual leader of Muslim Brotherhood. 

The cleric, who was in his nineties, was highly critical of Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.

He had been living in exile in Qatar since 2013, was granted the Qatari citizenship.

He had been tried and sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt in 2015.
