IQNA – Visitors to the Prophet's Mosque in the Saudi city of Medina surged to 5.8 million in one week, according to official figures.

This increase coincided with a school break in Saudi Arabia. The General Authority for Care of the Prophet's Mosque reported that the surge occurred during the 28th of the lunar Islamic month of Juamad II and the fourth of Rajab.

The figures included 130,401 male worshippers and 115,551 female worshippers. Separate visit timings were allotted for each gender, and they visited Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is located.

During this week, there were also distributions of 123,200 packs of Zamzam water and 99,832 fast-breaking meals in designated areas at the mosque. Additionally, 2,492 visitors explored the exhibitions in the mosque annexe, learning about its expansions over the years.

After performing the Umrah at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, many pilgrims traveled to Medina to offer prayers at the Prophet's Mosque and visit other Islamic landmarks in the city. Saudi Arabia is expecting around 10 million Muslims from abroad to perform the Umrah during the current season, which started over six months ago.

The General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques has taken steps to improve services for visitors, including disinfection and cleaning works, managing crowd flow, and assisting the physically challenged and elderly.
