He underlined that his visit to Iran was simply a scholarly trip.
Succumbing to pressures from Salafist extremists, Al-Azhar in a statement disapproved of Sheikh Karmia's trip to Iran and his meetings with Qom Seminary scholars.
The statement said Al-Azhar will "take necessary legal steps" against the trip.
In his meetings with scholars in Qom, Karima had called for cooperation between Qom Seminary and Al-Azhar and holding joint conference for confronting extremism.
