TEHRAN (IQNA) – Some members of Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners in Charlotte, US state of North Carolina, said they had no idea this was on the agenda when Commissioner Trevor Fuller proposed the proclamation to recognize the month of Ramadan from May 26 to June 24.

"If we're going to make a difference and make the world better for all of us, then we've got to come together,” Fuller said.

Two local imams and a professor of Islamic studies from UNCC-Charlotte shared their insight into the Muslim faith.

Not all commissioners thought it was a good idea.

"Over 1.6 billion Muslims around the world refrain from eating drinking smoking from dawn to sunset,” said Dr. Hadia Mubarak, a professor at UNCC.

"If I say I am a Christian, I have to love everybody regardless of the agenda, their religious beliefs or where they have come from,” said Commissioner Vilma Leake.

The proposal passed 6 to 3 with all Democrats voting yes and all Republicans voted no.
